Bachelor’s Program FAQ
1. What requirements do I need to fulfill in order to be accepted to the program?
To be accepted to the program, you must possess a general university or advanced technical college entrance qualification and a medical certificate clearing you to work at sea.
Further information (in German) can be found at the
German Federal Maritime and Hydrography Agency (Bundesamt für Seeschifffahrt und Hydrographie) under “Zeugnisse für Seeleute” (Certificates for Seamen).
Here you will also find appropriate information for those switching careers as well as for (former) marines, and a list of recognized occupations that require formal training in the fields of mechanical and electrical engineering.
2. What is actually meant by "being fit for working at sea?"
In order to work on board a ship, you are required to have a medical certificate clearing you to work at sea. To obtain this certificate, a physician must examine your general state of health as well as your hearing, vision, and your ability to distinguish different colors.
A list of accredited physicians who can issue a certificate clearing you to work at sea, as well as additional information, can be found on the Web site of the Berufsgenossenschaft für Transport und Verkehrswirtschaft.
3. Can I apply for a Bachelor’s degree program without an entrance qualification?
This is possible in certain cases. Please contact the Department of Maritime Studies’ General Student Advisory Service for more information and to see if you fulfill the prerequisites.
4. When can I apply?
We accept applications one year in advance. You can send us your application one year before you wish to begin the program, as soon as you have your most recent graduation certificate. Please send us your complete application by the end of February in the year you wish to begin the program.
5. Am I required to have a particular GPA?
Since we can only offer an AIDA scholarship to a limited number of students, we must make a selection from the large number of applications we receive. That’s why we ask you to send us your most current graduation certificate in addition to your complete application. Good to very good grades in math and science-related courses as well as in English are beneficial.
6. What does the scholarship offered by AIDA Cruises entail?
With the scope of a scholarship agreement, you will be able to attend exclusive additional lectures on advanced topics related to the cruise industry. In this case, AIDA Cruises will incur all fees which are due. Another benefit are the practical sessions on board AIDA ships which are integrated into your course of study. In addition, you will receive a performance-based scholarship paid monthly.
7. How can I pay for my course of study?
Students in the program can receive support in accordance with BAföG (a combination of student loan and grant offered by the German government). For more information, please contact the Studentenwerk Rostock (Web site in German). In addition, AIDA Cruises offers a performance-based scholarship.
