Bachelor of Marine Technical Engineering
The combined vocational training and degree program is offered by AIDA Cruises in cooperation with European Cruise Academy, Berufliche Schule Güstrow, AFZ (Aus- und Fortbildungszentrum Rostock GmbH) and University of Applied Sciences Wismar. The program runs for a period of five years and, in addition to a degree program in Ship Operation Technology, also includes a mechatronics vocational training.
Charted Course
As a technical watch officer, you are responsible for supervising and ensuring the safety of all the technical equipment and systems on board.
Structure and Content
In the first year, you begin your vocational training at the vocational school working together with the Aus- und Fortbildungszentrum Shipping and Port (AFZ) and AIDA Cruises, and you will also participate in a course on the basics of working at sea. In the second year, you will complete your basic course of study at the University of Applied Sciences Wismar. In the third year, you will complete your mechatronics vocational training. In the subsequent focused degree program, you will be acquire specialized knowledge of technical ship operations, as well as the ship’s systems and equipment, and you will also learn about the specific systems on cruise ships. You will then have the opportunity to apply the knowledge gained from your studies and vocational training in a number of integrated practical sessions on board. You will complete your degree program after five years (including completing your mechatronics vocational training after three years) with the requisite exams, submission of a bachelor’s thesis, and your technical watch officer’s license. In addition, within the scope of an additional vocational training program carried out during your degree program, you will attend lectures specific to the cruise industry held by the European Cruise Academy, which will provide a comprehensive look at the modern cruise industry.

- an Abitur (diploma from German secondary school qualifying for university admission) or advanced technical college entrance qualification
- your strengths include good grades in scientific courses
- good English and German skills
- and fitness for working at sea in an engineering position.
Career Prospects
After graduating with this bachelor's degree, you will be able to advance your career up to the level of Senior Engineer or Chief Engineer, ideally in combination with a master’s degree.
